چکیده
This paper aimed to review and compare the conventional and advanced numerical techniques used for stability analysis of rock slopes. Two important methods of probabilistic limit equilibrium analysis and distinct element method are used to check the stability of northern abutment rock slope of Gotvand dam (iran) and the advantages and disadvantages of each method is discussed. The results of the performed analyses shown that the distinct element method can show the instabilities that could not be shown by the limit equilibrium methods.

Numerical probabilistic analysis for slope stability in fractured rock masses using DFN-DEM approach
Due to existence of uncertainties in input geometrical properties of fractures, there is not any unique solution for assessing the stability of slopes in jointed rock masses. Therefore, the necessity of applying probabilistic analysis in these cases is inevitable. In this study a probabilistic analysis procedure together with relevant algorithms are developed using Discrete Fracture Network-Dis...
متن کاملHuman Life Saving by Simulation of Dam Break Using Flow-3d (a Case Study: Upper Gotvand Dam)
Dam break analysis plays a very important role in the risk assessment of dams. Large dams pose significantly higher risks to the people and property downstream of the dam as compared to smaller dams. So the flooding risk due to the possible failure of large dams is more crucial. The simulation of exceptional events characterized by high hydraulic and hydro-geologic risk is an actual problem for...
متن کاملStability analysis of support systems using a coupled FEM-DFN model (Case study: a diversion tunnel at Lorestan dam site, Iran)
Various structural discontinuities, which form a discrete fracture network, play a significant role in the failure conditions and stability of the rock masses around underground excavations. Several continuum numerical methods have been used to study the stability of underground excavations in jointed rock masses but only few of them can take into account the influence of the pre-existing natur...
متن کاملAssessment of water leakage through the right abutment of the Seymareh dam
One of the major issues in dam construction is water seepage, post impounding. Assessment and prediction of the amount of waterleakage can be useful in preventing such events. The Seymareh dam has been constructed on the Seymareh River in Ilam province,Southwest of Iran. The dam controls the floods and generates hydroelectric power. It is already under impoundment and the seepageproblem is bein...
متن کاملSoil and Rock Slope Stability Analysis based on Numerical Manifold Method and Graph Theory
Limit equilibrium method, strength reduction method and Finite Difference Methods are the most prevalently used methods for soil and rock slope stability analysis. However, it can be mention that those have some limitations in practical application. In the Limit equilibrium method, the constitutive model cannot be considered and many assumptions are needed between slices of soil and rock. The s...
